Lao Tzu regarded softness as the boundary between life and death.
He once expounded, "Softness gives life, hardness leads to death."
This means
that if one is soft, one lives; if one becomes hard, one dies.
His *Tao Te Ching* contains the following passage:
"When a
person is alive, they are soft and frail.
But dead
vegetation dries up and becomes stiff."
According to Lao Tzu's view of life and death, the clouds in the sky are living beings.
This is because they gather and disperse softly without rest.
The moon changes its shape and moves every day. Trees sprout new leaves on their branches and
change their clothes with every season. They are all living beings.
However, humans, who claim to be the lords of creation, rarely change their minds. They insist only on their own righteousness and view the righteousness of others with hostility.
They are,
without exception, dead beings.
As people age, there is a tendency for their thoughts to become stubborn and their hearts to harden.
There are quite a few who close their ears to others and merely repeat their past experiences like a record.
Are they
truly living people, or are they dead people?
